Beware Hidden Fees When Booking a Hotel

Booking a hotel can be an exercise in frustration when you’re trying to save money. A number of booking sties will offer certain prices for hotels that look great, only for you to find out that there were hidden fees in the fine print that you didn’t notice when you booked the room. How can you avoid these fees, and what should you be on the lookout for?

Resort Fees

What to Look For

Particularly hot destinations like the Hawaiian Islands, Las Vegas and Florida all tend to have hotels with very high nightly rates. In order to avoid these, you’ll want to keep an eye out for certain terminologies. Namely, be on the lookout for terms like “resort fees,” “amenity fees,” “destination fees” and “mandatory daily charges.”

Why They Exist

If you ask a hotel owner why these fees exist, they’re likely to tell you that these fees are for various amenities. Normally these would be ostensibly to cover parking services, shuttle services, wi-fi and other amenities that the guests might use. However, this is a rather flat reasoning, as the fees make it very difficult to accurately compare prices between hotels when shopping online. Let’s not mince words here: these fees are a bald-faced attempt to fleece customers, and they’re dishonest.

How to Avoid Them

There are a few things you can do to try to avoid these bogus upcharges. Firstly, make sure you read the fine print on any booking site or any hotel site you’re shopping for rooms on. Make sure they don’t include any info about potential upcharges from various fees. If you’re unsure, you can simply call the hotel directly and ask them if the price you’re seeing online reflects the actual price you’re going to get when you pay for your room. Don’t get ripped off when booking your next trip!
