If you thought that only young people, models, and rich kids could become online influencers, think again.
There are actually quite a few older folks who’ve become internet celebrities simply by sharing the things they do best.
Not Just for Kids
Ever thought about trying to make a name for yourself on social media? It may seem daunting, and the number of young people can feel discouraging at first, too. However, social media isn’t just for teens and twenty-somethings.
These days, there are plenty of people over the age of 50 that are taking the web by storm. They’re active on all platforms, too, from Facebook to Twitter, Instagram, and even YouTube. And they’re basically redefining the idea of what a true “influencer” actually looks like.
Find and Follow
If you’ve heard the term a zillion times but still aren’t quite sure you understand it, that’s understandable. Most influencers are “e-famous” or become “Instagram stars” because of their highly active social media accounts (and their follower count).
Many influencers attract people who aspire to be more like them, to live the good life. Some followers want to be more fashion-conscious, health-conscious, or eco-conscious. Other’s follow for tips, tricks, recipes, or inspiration.
Some people follow influencers for their sense of humor, or even because they have inspiring or uplifting stories to share.
Most influencers – at least the ones that weren’t already celebrities – have grown their following based on their personal style. Whether it’s photos, videos, or witty Tweets, they’ve amassed followers because people want to see what they have to share.
Not only is this a huge ego-boost, but it can also be somewhat lucrative as well. Influencers with high follower counts often get paid to share and review products or to promote specific content.
Plus, most influencers have built amazing communities and met lots of interesting new friends and contacts through social media.
No Age Limit
The thing is, with enough time, skill, and interactivity, anyone can be an influencer. Anyone can start a blog or an Instagram account. Truly, anyone can share their passions online.
Many older individuals are creating amazing spaces online nowadays. They’re sharing financial and travel tips, flaunting their style, teaching their crafts, and more.
For example, at 90 years old, The Mad Fashionista Helen Ruth Elam Van Winkle, has over 3.8 million followers. HotandFlashy, 56-year-old Angie Schmitt’s health, and beauty-oriented YouTube channel has tens of millions of views and over 425,000 subscribers.
And those are just a couple of quick examples.
