When we think of social networks, Facebook is usually the first one that comes to mind. Perhaps you even use Twitter or Instagram, too.
However, did you know that there’s a social network just for engaging with your real-life neighbors? It’s true. If you haven’t already joined Nextdoor, it’s a great way to engage with your neighborhood and local communities.
Nextdoor not only keeps you apprised to what’s going on nearby, but there’s also a marketplace and other features, too.
Here are some tips to get started using the site.
1. Signing Up
To sign up, you’ll use your real name and address, but don’t worry, there are privacy safeguards. Everyone who signs up for the site has to verify their address. This is done either via phone or by postcard.
If using your phone number, the site will use the billing address associated with the number to verify your address. If verifying via postcard, you’ll have to wait a few days and use the provided code to finish signing up.
2. Using the Site for Help
The site has lots of great features – and it gives you the ability to ask your neighbors for help. It never hurts to reach out if there’s something you’re struggling with. Often, there are neighbors that will come to your aid.
When we first moved into a new home, we struggled to get our washer and dryer moved into our kitchen. Thanks to Nextdoor, a couple of able-bodied neighbors came and helped us move. Plus, we made new friends in the process.
3. Perusing the Marketplace
Nextdoor’s For Sale & Free section is like a year-round garage sale you can browse from home. When you or your neighbors want to get rid of something, it’s as easy as listing it on the site.
Not only can you find some great bargains (and freebies, too), you won’t have to go far to get them. You can keep your search narrowed to your own neighborhood or browse a wider range as well.
4. Other Features
In addition to general posts and marketplace post, there are several other parts of the site as well. For example, there’s a Lost & Found section. Often, you’ll find people post about lost and found pets here. This is an invaluable resource if you’ve lost a pet, as it means your neighbors will be on the lookout.
You can also see local real estate, recommendations for local businesses, and lots of other suggestions from your neighbors.
